About Brick
As of the 2010 US Census, the township had a population of around 75000 people making it the state’s 13th-largest and the third most populous in Ocean County.
While the majority of the Township is situated on the mainland, beaches are stationed on the nearby Peninsula, a great, narrow barrier peninsula which separates Barnegat Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. The mainland and the beach area of the town aren’t geographically adjacent. Brick Township was incorporated by an Act of the New Jersey Legislature in 1850. The township has been named after Joseph Brick, the original owner of Bergen Iron Works located near the Metedeconk River. The Havens Homestead Museum
The Havens Homestead Museum was dedicated to the Havens family that initially settled in the Laurelton/Burrsville part of Brick. This museum is the original Havens home that lies on a small parcel of farmland. The museum has a gift store and runs tours of the Havens property daily.
America’s Safest City
After lingering for years in the top five, in 2006, Brick earned the title of “America’s Safest City,” out of 371 cities that took part nationwide in the 13th Morgan Quitno survey. Since the year 2000, Brick Township was dubbed the safest “city” (population over 75,000) in New Jersey. In 2003 and 2004, Brick Township ranked as the second safest city in the United States, after Newton, MA. In 2005, Brick Township dropped down to the fifth safest in the United States, before it bounced back to the top in 2006. In 2009, Brick Township ranked 6th on Newsmax’s list of the “25 Most Uniquely American Cities and Towns,” piece written by the current CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg. In deciding the rank, he cited Brick’s nod towards a safe city and that its commercial development of big stores & department stores, as well as restaurants, has made Brick a shopping destination for much of the County.
The Autism Epidemic
Brick Township has also been reported all over the news for the claimed epidemic, even with Brick’s autism rate being statistically near the US average. A large number of the children found to be autistic have been born in the Northern New Jersey and some other parts of the country. There is no evidence that the levels of autism are linked to any particular environmental aspect in Brick. Parents of children diagnosed with autism moved to the township to make use of the education programs offered by the school district.
The North American Blizzard
During the December 2010 American Blizzard, Brick received 30 inches of snow, the largest accumulation recorded in the state. In October 2012, areas of Brick were devastated by the Hurricane Sandy. Barrier Island and other waterfront properties were hit particularly hard.
