Solar Shingles vs. Asphalt Shingles: Which Is Worth the Investment?

12/16/2023

When you hear that technology is changing, you may only think about changes in the digital world. While it’s true the digital world is progressing in leaps and bounds, did you know that solar technology is also expanding at the speed of light? Or that you can produce your own electricity using specific roofing materials?

You may be familiar with all the stories that have been circulating about the environment.  Many things are moving toward sustainable energy and the solar industry is no different. In this particular case, solar shingle technology is evolving with the aim that every household in the nation switches to solar energy.

Why is this so important? For starters, solar shingles aren’t just made to save the ecosystem. They’re also made to help property owners save on their energy, water, and electricity bills.

If you’ve got asphalt shingles on your roof and are thinking about taking the first step toward having an eco-friendly home, keep reading! Let’s find out what makes solar shingles so special.

In this blog, you’ll read about:

Solar Shingles vs. Asphalt Shingles

In the solar world, we differentiate between two types of solar solutions – solar shingles and solar panels. You’ve probably seen solar panels (those big, bulky panels that can be seen on many roofs these days). What about solar panels that look like shingles?

As their name suggests – these are solar shingles, not solar panels. While solar panels are placed on pre-existing roofs, solar shingles are installed as any other type of roofing material.

There are several differences between solar shingles and their counterpart, asphalt shingles. The most obvious is that one has solar benefits, and the other doesn’t. Another difference includes their price, as you’ll find out more below.

What Are Solar Power Shingles?

Can it really be that simple? Can you truly find solar panels that look like shingles, but with the added benefit of generating energy? The answer is simple; YES. Not only can they produce power, but these solar power shingles or solar roof tiles are also quite durable and fire-resistant and can withstand winds up to 130 mph.

Why Do Homeowners Choose Asphalt Shingles?

Most homes in the U.S. opt for asphalt shingles, but why? Well, they’re the most affordable, for one. You also have the freedom to choose between many colors and styles. The only real downside to this material is that it’s more easily prone to storm damage. This means that if a hurricane hits your area, there’s a chance you may end up with missing or damaged shingles.  However, recent improvements in the wind resistance capabilities of asphalt shingles have diminished this problem.

Solar Shingles Cost Per Square Foot

It sounds too good to be true, but where’s the catch? In the end, solar shingles may not be for you if you’re thinking about keeping to a budget. There’s a notable difference between the cost of solar shingles per square foot versus the cost of asphalt shingles. For example, you may pay about $4 to $5 per square foot for an average asphalt shingle roof.

For solar shingles, you could shell out $6 per square foot or more.

Which Solution Is Worth the Investment?

If we look at the lifespan of asphalt shingles, you can expect your property to be protected for at least 25 years. Sure, you have to take into account that your roof can face problems that will affect its lifespan, but if you take good care of it, it can last longer.

Let’s say you need to replace your asphalt shingle roof every 25 years. Americans live 77 years on average, so, according to our calculations, you’ll need to change your roof approximately three times in your lifetime!

Solar shingles are designed to last just as long as asphalt shingles while producing free energy for you the entire time.

So, which one to choose? While we can’t tell you what to do, we can advise that you look at all the information listed above and consult a roofing professional. Look at the lifespan of shingles, how much they cost, and what benefits you can get with either one. Then decide which solution would be best for your home.
