Levittown, PA: Then and Now

Placed in Bucks County of Pennsylvania, Levittown became the largest suburb of the city of Philadelphia. This planned community emerged from an idea of Bill Levitt and Alfred Levitt who architected, designed and built the entire location. They first purchased the land in 1951 and marked it by their six typical houses. Today, Levittown houses more than 52 thousand inhabitants.

Levitt and Sons entered the history by purchasing the land in 1951 on which Levittown grew. They marked the territory building six typical houses which will to this day remain a trademark of Levittown. Those six houses were the Levittowner, the Rancher, the Jubilee, The Pennsylvanian, the Colonial and the County Clubber. All of them were single-family properties with lawns, and they were relatively affordable. The brothers began working on the town in 1952 and in that time there as another Levittown built on Long Island by William Levitt.

The process of building this town is memorable as well. Brothers Alfred and Bill desired a faster construction, so they invented and refined their building method involving 26 step. Applying the method, the brothers managed to build 17,300 homes in only two years time. This building process meant leaving the housing stationary and moving from one house to another. Each worker was assigned one specific and relatively simple task which he had to be completely devoted to. The Levitt brothers came up with a plan that got them a new house built every twenty minutes. Read more about Levittown history.

They planned a complete community meaning they designed districts with curvilinear roads calm and organize traffic. There were no large four-way intersections, and the brothers donated land to each district to build a public school on. They envisioned that churches and state institutions would be positioned on main passages like the Levittown Parkway. The brothers also planned for the town to have public pools, baseball and playground fields,  and greenbelts. When they put four homes on display near the shopping center they also had in mind, more than 30 thousand people came to view and consider living in Levittown- just in the first two days.

Today, Levittown is a lively and modern suburb which still to this day looks astonishing and unusual. The Levitt brothers defined the meaning of suburbs in an architectural sense and even today properties are affordable. There are 41 sections or neighborhoods in Levittown that are distributed in four municipalities like Bristol Township, Falls Township, Middletown Township, and Tullytown.  Each municipality of Township has its own school district that manages public elementary and high schools. Neshaminy school district, Bristol Township school district and Pennsbury School District handle the majority of schools in the area in and around Levittown.

Levittown is by this day famous for its architecture and founders of the city. It is still developing, and there are many new things to come to the Levittown area.
